Should You Use Your Name for Your Business?
How to Decide Between Using Your Name or a Business Name
Choosing the right name for your business can feel overwhelming. In this episode of Online Business AMA, Lauren helps Melanie decide between using her name or creating a brand name for her business.
Using Your Name: If you’re the face of your brand—like in coaching or creative services—using your name makes it personal and flexible for future pivots. It builds trust and authenticity, but it can complicate scaling or maintaining privacy.
Creating a Business Name: A brand name like “Aligned Coaching Co.” or “Soul Strategy Collective” can make scaling easier and create clarity about what you offer. It also provides separation between your personal and professional identity. However, overly specific names might limit your growth if your business evolves.
How to Decide:
Consider your long-term vision. Are you building a personal brand, or something that can grow beyond you?
Test it out. Say each option aloud and see which feels more aligned.
Keep it simple. A clear, memorable name beats something overly clever.
Remember, your business name isn’t permanent. Many entrepreneurs rebrand as they grow—it’s completely normal. What matters most is the value you deliver to your clients.
